Below, we explain the difference between Aid & Attendance and VA Community Care (CCN).

Veterans often hear about different VA programs, and it can get confusing fast. The video below highlights challenges some families have faced when applying for VA Aid & Attendance, which is a separate benefit from VA Community Care (CCN).

While Allied Home Care primarily provides in-home services through VA Community Care (CCN) when authorized by the VA, we can also help point families in the right direction if they are exploring Aid & Attendance as an additional option.

What is VA Aid & Attendance?

Aid & Attendance is a monthly financial benefit that may help eligible Veterans (or surviving spouses) pay for care at home or in an assisted living setting. This program typically has more restrictions and requirements than VA Community Care.

This benefit requires that the Veteran or surviving spouse comply with the following:

    • They are over age 65.
    • They are a Veteran, a spouse of a living Veteran, or a surviving spouse of a Veteran.
    • The Veteran served as “Active Military” status for 90 days during an approved time of war: WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War.
    • The Veteran had an honorable discharge.
    • The Veteran or surviving spouse meets income requirements.
    • The Veteran, spouse of a living Veteran, or surviving spouse of a Veteran needs assistance with bathing, grooming, meal preparation, etc. on a regular basis in order to stay independent in their home or chosen place of residence.

Approval is not automatic and timelines can vary depending on the application.

Can Aid & Attendance be used with VA Community Care?

In some situations, yes — families may be able to use Aid & Attendance alongside other VA services, depending on the Veteran’s eligibility and VA authorization.

That’s why our team focuses on helping you understand your care options clearly, without confusion.
